King's College Cambridge 2008 - Angels From The Realms of Glory |
] |
I am still in driving licence limbo :( But I should not be too impatient - it can take up to 20 days and it's only been a week! Let's hope it comes next week!
Off to the Forest this weekend for a good dose of running around the woods pretending to be various bonkers creatures (I am going to have to run around to keep warm)! I have bottled some of my homebrew to take along, and warming gingery stuff and whisky will be coming along too :) :)
I am hoping this foolishness will cheer me up like it did a couple of weeks ago, as I have fallen down the glum hole again and have been stuck in there the past few days! Rubbishness! Perhaps the glum hole has slippery sides?

I am sure there was a bunch of stuff I was supposed to be doing! *brainfuzz*
Still, I've been quite good today - spreadsheets poked, email sent about parking permit form, new user account created and training write up written. Perhaps I should plot what I am going to wear this weekend for Legion of Dreams whilst waiting for webstats reports to run! :) :)
The weather is very doom today! :O :O

Training in London yesterday was good. Learnt a few new things, always helpful! Then we pootled to Treadwells to pick up the Abraxas journal and then to the Porterhouse pub for a couple of beers whilst waiting for the train :)
Due to traffic fail coming back from Salisbury station I missed choir practice, ooops... hope that's not going to affect things too much, especially as I was given a link to a website that should help me figure out what we're supposed to be singing!
Mage last night was great, there's sooooo much doom! I'm very much enjoying this game, I will be sad when it finishes in a few weeks! But then there's Amber in the new year, so that will hopefully make up for it...
Right, back to writing training report and poking spreadsheets...

The official NaNoWriMo word count was 51,469, that's what was done and uploaded before Midnight. The final word count with the epilogue added since then is 52,375. Now, off to bed and I'll let it be for a few days then go back and begin cleaning it up for public consumption. Very, very tired.

Just as an FYI to myself Kings cross doesn't do a bloody train back to cambridge after 11pm until 7 minutes past midnight.. So I could have stayed and got random unthanks tat..
ah well
Concert was good
Further away from the stage (and above it) than in Cambridge but closer than when seen supporting Billy Bragg Seemed to be a few technical issues mostly with microphones imo - Becky sounded a lot louder than Rachel, and the brass stuff was a bit too loud, but all in all still very good. Only minor set changes from the Cambridge gig (In the bleak midwinter instead of Sexy Sadie for example) I rather like the bigger band sound of the new stuff and the rejigs of the older songs though I'm not certain Sally was convinced, it does seem like they are going through a Sergeant Pepper or Use your Illusion type moment in this regard but it works and sounds good, but they also sound pretty damn good with a more cut down back to basics style too.
Of course myself and Sally also disagree on which unthank is prettier, Sally being pro Becky and I'm still a Rachel fan (though this is not to say I'm not aware of the attractiveness of the younger sister) she just looks a bit more impish and cheeky which also seems to come across well in song.
In related news Becky Unthank could do her own shoes up at this concert, and apparently strapless dresses are good for clog dancing :-)
Jonny and Lucy the support act were again fabulous and well deserving the support that the main band give them, set was pretty much the same as in Cambridge (as expected really) but as it contains songs I don't have on their CD I was happy, plus Lucy has a fantastic voice.
All in all a good night, only pity was I didn't have time to pick up the Lucky Gilchrist CD single as it had some B-sides I wanted.

I made a carbon offsetting spreadsheet. I am such a geek! That's by far the most interesting thing that has happened so far today.
Just now I ate a chocolate-marshmallow tea cake and it made my teeth hurt loads. I don't like this 'ow! sugar!' thing that keeps happening, it actually makes me not want to eat sugary things at all. I asked the dentist about it when I was last there but they just said 'brush with sensitive toothpaste' which I've been doing for about a month now, and it's not made a difference! Fail! Perhaps I need the sensitive teeth mouthwash too, but I don't know if that works!
At least last week's sore throat/earache went away, I think the medicinal brandy came in handy for fighting off the plague! :)

A shiny new week dawns! The weekend was pretty productive. Saturday I already wrote about, and Sunday I went to Southampton with my mum and visited the glorious temple to the household gods that is Ikea. I got (another) fleecy blanky and some bottles to put homebrew goodness in so I can bring it to larps :D
Tomorrow I bimble to London for training, and also have a brief visit to Treadwells so I can pick up a copy of the Abraxas journal. If they have any left that is! :)
I want my licence to come in the post...

It is a land rover! And it is GLORIOUS! The ultimate in shiny! I am in love! I would post a picture but it's on my phone and the cable to get it off my phone is on workcomputer. ( I found a picture from the garage's website... ) I could probably fit 5 larpers plus kit in there... perfect!
This all feels terribly adult. I even managed to contain my squee at the garage. Just have to wait for my precioussssss to be serviced and then for the garage to see my real-life driving licence once I get it in the post (they won't let me drive anything away without seeing it) :) So I don't actually have it right now, but it is mine, if that makes sense :D
But once I get it then I shall drive EVERYWHERE!!!! Nobody in the UK or Europe is safe! Wheeeeee!!!!! *runs around*
I also spent my borders gift voucher before borders broke utterly, and managed to get 6 cds and a computer book. Awesome! Yay for belated birthday present goodness :D That was quite a productive day!

I was planning to play some Dawn of War tonight seeing as I was home alone, but I ended up sitting with a pint of ale in front of the computer - I got sucked into reading early church history stuff on the internet whilst listening to bleak yet catchy scandinavian metal. I really don't know why I ended up religious-geekery-spodding, but it's quite refreshing - lately it's been a rare occasion when my brain took the interesting educational option rather than the blowing pixels up option :D
Tomorrow I am going to spend my borders gift voucher in case borders breaks completely, then will be pootling to the garage, then back home to type up some stuff for my mum and put fleecy stuff on a couple of the plants in the garden as it's getting quite cold at night now... Would rather have gone to Wales but you can't have everything! Next time Gadget, next time...

NaNo is not going to be won by me this year - not by a long shot. On the positive side though, I have done a lot more planning out what is going to be happening, and one part that was getting me very bogged down (the investigation of the murder that is kind of central to the story) is beginning to fall into place again.
Ian pointed out that it possibly wasn't the best story to attempt for this, because there in no way I could finish this story in 50,000 words!
Part of it has been other things on mind, part of it has been a lack of discipline in doing the writing, part of it has been not wanting to hog the PC all the time.
But in general... I've written most of the final scene, and I like that. I've written the bit where Kisa and Andrew meet, and like it too. And I've written other bits & pieces, have done a lot of planning, and think I actually have a plot for the murder investigation, which is good. It started off as the thing that had to happen for the actual story to work, but now it's working out in my head, to a certain extent, in its own right.
In other news, my mother called last night and I'm feeling stressed about it. She reckons she might have someone to buy the flat as it is, and wanted to know how much I wanted for it. I need to do some research on that. But the whole conversation made me wish I hadn't involved her in this at all. i don't like her being in my life to this extent, and I really don't want her to be overly involved in Peter's life.

Ok... next step... get a car and do the pass plus thingy! :O :O

I am being a letdown-disappointment rubbish person again! *sigh* :( I hate cancelling on people, especially when by me not going it makes it more expensive for others! And I rather wanted to go to this thing too - not only was it an opportunity to see people, it would have been just what I needed *sadface* I hide from facebook now in shame!
Unrelatedly (but it could have been potentially relatedly if it gets worse), I seem to be coming down with something rubbish. Headache, sore throat, swollen glands, and the slight lurking beginnings of an earache (the other ear to the other week). Coffee and lemsip time!
Have a driving lesson at 12 so hopefully I can hold the plague off for now. But at least it's a nice bright day today (so far)...

Are wonderful. I love the smell of them, the taste of them - how juicy and refreshing they are...
But they're terrible. They take too long to eat - and once you've started pealing then you cannot stop, for there is juice (oh yay! there is juice) and they are messy...and turn your fingers orange!
But now my desk smells fabulous. And so do my hands.

This morning I got a big box delivered to my work full of wonders! Coffee flavoured sweets, marzipan chocolate, warm flompy scarf and hat, postcards, photos, toys... it was amazing!!! Thank you hildekitten, the box has been amusing everyone at work too :D:D
I think my glumpyness is slowly going as I have the urge to plot again. Non-plotting is a major sign of error - as I was very squee to find LoD froth emails in my inbox it must mean my brain is mending! I still have no idea what any of the brainfail was all about though! *confused*

Am going to try to get a place in the Battlestar Galactica game at games club in January but I don't know if there are enough other games running... as games organisy person it's really my responsibility to make sure everyone has something to play - if there is a lack of gameage I'll have to step in to run something!

| another socio-political post |
[23 Nov 2009|11:31pm] |
Interesting article in the Independent today by Yasmin Alibhai-Brown on the assertion that in modern society Feminism is somewhat in retreat. I tend to agree with her and its a shame that such things do occur - the fact that you get folks like Clarkson who are so utterly unpleasant and retrograde in attitudes towards women and it is celebrated or at best accepted as ok behaviour. It reminds me of an article by Johann Hari the other week on the rise in homophobic attacks and the rising lack of tolerance and scapegoating etc. in society. When did such become acceptable practice?
It just feels that in spite of progress made there is still definitely a battle to be fought for equal rights for women, homosexuals, ethnic and religious minorities (hate crimes against Jews and Muslims are on the rise) etc etc.
And that the forces of reaction are on the rise.
Even in my own backyard so to speak the spectre of creationism hasn't been fully slain, I'm not down with militant atheism of the sort Dawkins et al. promote I'm quite happy for people to have their imaginary friends if they like them, but the quashing of actual science and understanding by a misplaced idea of equality (and it isn't equality these folks would sooner remove evolution altogether if they could) isn't cool either.
Its a somewhat depressing thought that the world is going this way however I do have faith in the common sense of the British spirit to know that somethings aren't fair and that we can change things and make the world a better place. The current government has done a lot for equal rights and so forth and whilst its not perfect and I do disagree with a bunch of policies and their move towards executive control over our parliament, I still feel they are best placed to carry this torch forwards seeing as Nick Clegg has pretty much said a vote for the lib-dems is a vote for the tories.

I occasionally wear a red t-shirt which says "4 a minute, 12 hours a day..." on it which then has a time log and a little mark for each of these times. It confuses folks, often people think its one of my comedy t-shirts that it's about how often a bloke thinks of sex or something. Often I'm asked what it means. Its the piece rate of sweatshop labourer.
Now Primark recently opened a new shop in Cambridge, I know a lot of my friends shop there or places like it around the country. I hear its good value for money. I'm sure it is, for us.
Shame they get their clothes from places around the world that use people in sweatshop conditions, hours and rates of pay and manufacture. Even in this country, in January for example a factory in the UK was found to be working for Primark and paying workers £3.50 an hour.
They said they'd look into changing such conditions and so forth for all their workforce a good while ago. They still haven't. Its why War on Want still campaigns against them.
I'm not saying don't shop there, I'm saying I won't until it does change its practices, and I'm asking if the money you're saving is actually worth it, is it worth getting another shirt or dress that in a year or two you'll be giving to a friend or a charity shop.
Check out the war on want website if you want its under campaigns, supermarkets and sweatshops.
Just something to consider if you think of yourself as an ethical person.

Due to a cash flow error (not my fault for once)! I have 5p in the bank and £2.83 cash. This sad state of affairs means the planned weekend adventures are looking unlikely... can't wait for pay day on Monday! Still, I have just enough for a pint at the pub on Thursday :D
Driving lesson was the smoothest and best yet, despite the best attempts of the weather to make me crash. Typically, the weather is lovely now, but I suppose it is good to get the practice.
